Detainment of tanker stacked with Iranian unrefined 'great news': US

"Magnificent news, UK has kept the supertanker Grace I loaded down with Iranian oil destined for Syria infringing upon EU sanctions," Bolton tweeted.

"America and our partners will keep on counteracting routines in Tehran and Damascus from benefitting off this illegal exchange," he said.

Iran censured the detainment of the tanker as an "unlawful interference," yet Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said in an explanation that the payload was accepted bound for the Banyas Refinery in Syria, which is liable to European assents.

"That treatment facility is the property of an element that is liable to European Union authorizations against Syria," he said.

The 330 meters Grace 1 tanker was ended in the early long stretches of Thursday by police and traditions offices in Gibraltar, a minor abroad British region on Spain's southern tip.

They were supported by a unit of British Royal Marines.
